Stabat Mater

Stabat Mater

Workshop based on works by d’Astorga, Pergolesi, Vivaldi and Sances
Commissioned by Stephane Lissner / Festival lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence

The Festival Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence offers a carte blanche to develop a working method for the stage presence of singers using material related to the Stabat Mater. Based on religious music, the challenge consists of inventing a dramatic approach that goes beyond the music without appropriating the artifices of opera. The study of iconography in painting as a working model is used as a guide. The singers then develop an improvised grammar of the body. Through this process the painting that they represent evolves and its meaning is continually modified, becoming ever more complex.

Les têtes se balancent, des regards s’esquissent, les bras se mettent en mouvement, des torsions se créent où chaque interprète vit physiquement l’instant qu’il chante. Et le tableau d’évoluer en permanence, de se démultiplier.
